What to Expect at Assessments

What to expect at the assessment:

·         No baseball activity should occur prior to the start of the assessment other than stretching – this includes no playing catch, no swinging bats, etc.

·         When the assessment begins, we will have a brief meeting and participants will play catch, field ground balls, catch fly balls, take batting practice, and run bases (time allowing).

·         Your child/children should wear comfortable, athletic sneakers:

o   NO CLEATS.

o   Please ensure the sneakers are dry before heading into the gym.

·         We recommend your child wear baseball pants and a protective cup.

·         Upon signing-in, each child will be provided a plain white t-shirt with a number:

o   The coaches running the assessments (evaluators) will only be provided with the number of the player, no names will be shared until assessments are complete.

o   We do our best to keep this as anonymous as possible:

§  We keep it anonymous so the evaluators make judgements based on the skills they see and not the name they may recognize.

§  A downside of living in small communities is there only a certain level of anonymity that we can maintain.

o   Players must return the t-shirt at the end of the assessment.

·         Equipment Needed:

o   Quabbin Area Little League will provide balls for the event and will have some helmets and bats available:

§  We encourage participants to bring their own bat and helmet – bat must be compliant with Little League regulations and have a USA baseball stamp.

§  See www.littleleague.org/playing-rules/bat-information/ for details.

o   Participants must bring their own glove and they should plan to wear a baseball cap.

o   Players may bring their own drink, though there are water fountains available – no food in the gym.

·         The only people allowed in the gym when the assessment begins are participants, evaluators* and any youth volunteers* who are helping for the day – parents/guardians or anyone transporting the player(s) may stay in the welcome area at the Baglio Center or are welcome to ‘drop off’ and leave the facility until the assessment ends at 11:00.  We only have the gym until 11:00 so please be ready pick up your child/children right at 11:00.

·         Final decisions on what players are selected for the major level will be made within a week after the final assessment and all participants will be notified of their status via email or phone.

* Occasionally, evaluators and youth volunteers have children or other relatives participating.
